Britney Spears’ fans, known as the Britney Army, have rallied to push her 2011 track “Selfish” into the top 5 of the U.S. iTunes top 40 singles chart. This move came less than 24 hours after Justin Timberlake released his new single with the same name. Currently, Timberlake’s song is at the top of the iTunes tally in the U.S., with Britney’s track at No. 2. Fans encouraged streaming of Britney’s song to affect first-week streaming figures for Timberlake’s new single.
Britney’s “Selfish” has also reached the top spot on the iTunes pop chart in countries like Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. The Britney Army’s effort extended to radio stations in the U.S., which started playing “Selfish.” There has been no response from either Spears or Timberlake regarding this global chart movement.
While Britney Spears has declared she has no plans to return to the music business, her history with Timberlake in the late 1990s and early 2000s continues to link them in the minds of their fans. The recent trolling effort coincided with Timberlake’s promotion of his first solo single since 2018. The couple’s past relationship was highlighted in Spears’ 2023 memoir, revealing personal details, and Timberlake has apologized in 2021 for his past actions related to Spears and Janet Jackson.
Timberlake, currently in promotional mode, recently appeared on The Tonight Show and is set to perform as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. The Britney Army’s iTunes chart movement adds a layer of intrigue to the ongoing narrative between the two pop icons.
