The music video preview begins with an unidentified actor placing a drink on a surface, then filling a bathroom sink with a bucket of ice before dunking his face into it. Meanwhile, a hand adorned with a claw-like glove appears, creeping around the nearby doorframe. Just as the viewer anticipates discovering who or what is behind the door, the video’s title and release date flash on the screen, leaving them in suspense.
A little over a week ago, Grande uploaded a couple of photos to Instagram that fans speculated were from the set of this upcoming music video. In the pictures, she wears a cat-ear headband and has “TRUE LOVE” and “BE MINE” hearts affixed to her wall next to a painted portrait. The portrait shows its subject only from the bottom lip down to the shoulders, adding an element of mystery. Notably, no caption was provided for the pictures, fueling further speculation among her fans.
Director Christian Breslauer, who previously worked on the visuals for both “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” from Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album, commented on her Monday teaser and shared the sneak peek on his own Instagram account. “Get your popcorn, take your seats,” Breslauer wrote on the pop star’s post. Over on his page, he teased, “ACT III… soon,” heightening the anticipation.
As Grande prepares to release “The Boy Is Mine,” her current single “We Can’t Be Friends” continues to dominate the Billboard Pop Airplay chart, holding the No. 1 spot as of May 25. The Pop Airplay chart, which has been active since October 1992, ranks songs based on weekly plays on over 150 mainstream top 40 radio stations monitored by Mediabase, with data provided to Billboard by Luminate. “We Can’t Be Friends” previously reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart dated March 23, coinciding with the week that Eternal Sunshine debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
