Beyoncé may rule the world now, but Tina Knowles has revealed that her daughter faced bullying during her childhood.

In a video interview with Vogue posted on Sunday (May 26), the businesswoman discussed raising her daughters to embrace their individuality, regardless of those who tried to undermine them. “Beyoncé, she was very shy,” Knowles shared. “She got bullied a bit.”

She recalled a poignant moment: “The day that she stood up for someone … she didn’t stand up for herself, she stood up for them,” Knowles said. “I’m getting emotional talking about it. I couldn’t have been more proud of her.”

Knowles also spoke about her youngest daughter, Grammy-winning musician Solange, describing her as “always an activist” who often asked people to sign petitions. As for Beyoncé’s best friend and former Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, Knowles remembered her as a “little peacemaker” during her youth. “Kelly was always this kid that tried to protect everybody,” she added.

Sharing the interview clip on her personal account, Knowles wrote, “Each child is different!” She added, “But all so special. I believe kids are born with their personalities. My three girls all handled things very differently. Learn their personalities and respect their individuality.”

Now, Beyoncé is a mother herself, with Tina Knowles taking on the role of grandmother to 12-year-old Blue Ivy and 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir, whom Beyoncé shares with Jay-Z. The vocalist is imparting the same lessons she learned from her mother to her own children, emphasizing the importance of ignoring negativity and focusing on their craft.

For instance, Knowles recently shared that Beyoncé offered wise words to Blue Ivy after she received negative comments about her dancing during the Renaissance Tour. “It was a great life lesson because her mom basically said, ‘Listen, if you let this get you down, then they win,’” Knowles recalled. “‘So you should go and work harder. And, you know, just work harder and get your skills together and go out there and blast it.’”
