In a recent interview with the Irish Times, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan throws his support behind Taylor Swift’s controversial decision to release a double album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” The record clocks in at a whopping two hours, featuring 31 songs.
Corgan, who himself released a lengthy album (“Atum”) with the Pumpkins in 2023, champions artistic freedom. He argues that with streaming services readily available, listeners can simply skip songs they don’t like.
“Taylor Swift is one of the most gifted pop artists of all time,” Corgan states. “Why is it a bad thing she’s giving fans more music? Just make your own playlist if you want!”
He compares the situation to the potential discovery of unreleased Sinéad O’Connor songs. “Would it be bad if someone found a treasure trove of Sinéad’s work? Absolutely not!”
Corgan’s comments come as Swift enjoys her sixth consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with “Tortured Poets.” The surprise double album smashed her previous sales record and made her the first artist ever to occupy the entire top 14 of the Hot 100 chart.
