The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted in Basel, Switzerland, marking the event’s third time in the country. The competition, scheduled for May 13, 15, and 17 at the 12,000-capacity St. Jakobshalle Arena, previously took place in Lugano in 1956 and Lausanne in 1989. Basel, known for its rich culture and strategic location, was chosen over Geneva based on criteria like hotel capacity, security, and experience with large events.

Switzerland has a strong history with Eurovision, having won the first contest in 1956 with Lys Assia’s “Refrain” and again in 1988 with Celine Dion’s “Ne partez pas sans moi.” Last year, Swiss singer Nemo, the first non-binary act to win Eurovision, secured the top spot in Malmö, Sweden, with a powerful performance about identity. Basel’s selection as the 2025 host city highlights the country’s ongoing connection to the competition.

Eurovision’s executive supervisor, Martin Österdahl, expressed excitement about Basel hosting the event, noting its ideal location at the crossroads of Europe and its unique blend of tradition and innovation. He emphasized that Basel’s exceptional venue and hospitality will provide a memorable experience for all participants and fans. Ticket sales for the nine shows, including dress rehearsals, are expected to begin soon.
