Kendrick Lamar has provided insight into the meaning behind the phrase “not like us,” a key refrain from his 2024 diss track aimed at Drake. In a rare interview with SZA for Harper’s Bazaar, Kendrick explained that “not like us” refers to the energy and essence of the kind of person he represents. According to Kendrick, it symbolizes someone with strong morals, values, and the ability to confront fear and mistakes while staying true to themselves.
During the interview, Kendrick described this identity as one who doesn’t pander or pretend. He emphasized that “not like us” represents individuals who believe in something and stand firm in their beliefs, even when acknowledging their flaws. For Kendrick, it’s about being able to admit mistakes and express vulnerability, qualities he believes are integral to the man he identifies as.
When SZA asked how Kendrick channels such combative energy into his songs despite not being an angry person, Kendrick clarified his perspective. He explained that while he doesn’t consider himself angry, he believes in the existence of both love and war. This balance, he said, allows him to react to situations without letting them define who he is, simply allowing emotions to flow through him.
Kendrick also discussed his spiritual journey, revealing his personal connection with God and how running has become a form of meditation for him. He described how his daily runs provide a space for reflection, during which he feels a deep connection with God, often receiving what he calls “whispers and downloads.” This practice has become a crucial part of his routine, helping him navigate both his creative process and life’s challenges.
In addition to his thoughts on music and spirituality, Kendrick hinted at future endeavors beyond the music industry. While he remains a powerhouse in music, he views it as just the beginning of his creative journey. Kendrick expressed curiosity about where his path will take him next, allowing his faith and the mystery of life to guide him as he explores new creative fields.
