Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels has opened up about his personal struggles with mental health, revealing how deeply he resonated with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. In MSNBC’s documentary My Generation, McDaniels discussed the impact Nirvana had on him, describing their music as an honest reflection of emotional turmoil. He especially connected with Cobain, who died by suicide in 1994, saying, “I relate to Kurt because I was there. Later in my life, I became suicidal, and I’m fortunate to still be here.”
In his 2016 memoir Ten Ways Not to Commit Suicide, McDaniels candidly detailed his darkest moments, particularly during a 1997 tour in Japan. Despite overcoming alcohol addiction, he was battling depression, the loss of his voice, and inner-band tensions. He credits Sarah McLachlan’s song “Angel” with helping him cope, writing that the song kept him grounded and stopped him from taking drastic actions during his suicidal thoughts.
McDaniels’ experiences highlight the importance of addressing mental health struggles openly. He emphasizes that healing begins with acknowledging one’s emotions, whether good or bad, and believes sharing his journey can help others who are going through similar battles.
