Tommy Richman may be proving he’s not just a one-hit wonder. The Virginia-born singer, signed to Brent Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy label, was one of 2024’s biggest breakout stars. His hit “Million Dollar Baby” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by “Devil Is a Lie.” However, his debut album Coyote failed to make the Billboard 200, leaving some to question his staying power.
Now, it seems Richman is ready to make a comeback. On January 30, he broke his social media silence, teasing a new song called “Actin Up.”
The first thing listeners notice is the beat. The track features steelpan drums similar to Soulja Boy’s “Crank That,” along with heavy 808s, eerie piano chords, and signature Mannie Fresh cowbells. The production gives off a high-energy, club-ready vibe.
Richman’s falsetto vocals glide over the beat, mixing catchy flows with sing-rap elements. His lyrics combine a defiant stance against critics (“I’m sick and tired, all these people sayin’ names”) with personal reflection (“I gotta stay alive for my soulmate”) and dancefloor commands (“Bend it over, break it down, back it up”).
Many fans believe Tommy Richman has another hit. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Holy shit, he has another hit,” while another commented, “Banger incoming.” Even fellow artist Russ chimed in on Instagram, saying, “This is it.”
However, not everyone is convinced. Some listeners argue that “Actin Up” isn’t strong enough to erase past controversies.
In October 2024, Richman sparked debate when he stated he is “not a Hip-Hop artist.” The comment upset some fans, given his clear influences from Hip-Hop and his affiliation with Brent Faiyaz. After backlash, he clarified, saying, “I don’t want to be boxed in. I grew up on Hip-Hop, but I’m a singer.”
Despite his explanation, some critics remain skeptical. “I thought you didn’t want to be Hip-Hop anymore?” one person commented under his latest snippet. Others pointed out that the track’s style contradicts his earlier statements.
Even some critics admit they enjoy the snippet. Hip-Hop journalist Elliott Wilson, who previously called out Richman, confessed, “I HATE how much I like this snippet.”
It remains to be seen whether “Actin Up” will match the success of “Million Dollar Baby.” If the full song resonates with fans, it could help Richman move past controversy and solidify his place in music.
Regardless of the debate, one thing is certain—Tommy Richman knows how to keep people talking.
