Selena Gomez Reveals Plans to Adopt as a Single Mom Before Falling for Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez is determined to become a mom one way or another. The 31-year-old singer and actress revealed in her TIME100 cover story on Wednesday (May 29) that she had plans to adopt children as a single mother before she began dating Benny Blanco.

In her interview with TIME, which is honoring her billion-dollar Rare Beauty business this month, Gomez shared that she had become accustomed to being single after not dating for five years. “A lot of people are afraid of being alone, and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone,” she explained. “Then I kind of accepted it.”

Gomez elaborated on her plan, saying, “I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.”

However, everything changed when she fell in love with Blanco. The couple is now discussing starting a family, with Blanco mentioning in a recent interview with Howard Stern that having kids with Gomez is “a topic of conversation every day.”

“That’s my next goal, to check the box,” Blanco said about becoming a father. “I take everything a day at a time, and I just know that when I look at her, I think, ‘I don’t know a world where it could be better than this.’ That’s what I always say to her.”

Gomez responded to her partner’s candid comments on Stern’s show by joking to TIME, “He can’t lie to save his life… If he’s asked a question, he’ll answer it.”

In her cover story, the “Only Murders in the Building” star also shared more about how she and Blanco, longtime musical collaborators, began dating in the summer of 2023. Initially, Gomez saw Blanco as just a friend and even asked him if he knew anyone he could set her up with.

It wasn’t until he introduced her to one of his friends at a birthday party that Gomez realized she actually liked Blanco. “It just happens when you least expect it,” she said. “I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon.”
