Halsey is delving into profound questions with her upcoming album The Great Impersonator, announced Tuesday (Aug. 27) alongside a reflective, decades-spanning trailer that teases new music. The trailer arrives just two months after the pop star revealed her diagnosis with Lupus and a rare T-cell disorder. It opens with Halsey pondering in a voice-over, “When you get sick like that, you start thinking about ways it could’ve all been different.” This introspective journey is visualized through clips of modern-day Halsey, interspersed with shots of her donning retro outfits and evolving hairstyles that span several decades.

In the voice-over, Halsey questions her identity across different eras, asking, “What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s? Am I still Halsey every time? In every timeline, do I still get sick? Do I become a mom?” These questions echo through the trailer, as snippets of the single “Lucky,” which creatively reimagines Britney Spears’ classic hit, play alongside unreleased tracks inspired by the musical styles of each era. The trailer ends with a poignant reflection: “If it all ended right now, is this a person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is it even you?” underscoring the album’s deep exploration of identity and self-perception.

Though the release date for The Great Impersonator has yet to be announced, anticipation is high following Halsey’s 2021 album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Over the past three years, Halsey has released several singles, including “Die 4 Me” and “So Good,” both of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Now, with the lead single “Lucky” and other tracks like “The End” and “Lonely Is the Muse,” Halsey is embarking on a new era that promises to be both introspective and innovative.
