Longtime songwriter and *NSYNC star JC Chasez has embarked on a new creative journey with Playing With Fire, a 16-track musical theater concept album. Inspired by a theatrical adaptation of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein by playwright Barbara Field, the project explores themes of love, responsibility, and the human condition. Chasez, along with Golden Globe-winning musician Jimmy Harry, took the original play and transformed it into a moving musical experience. The album marks Chasez’s first major musical project since his 2004 solo album Schizophrenic.
The concept for Playing With Fire is deeply rooted in emotional storytelling, with Chasez emphasizing how the timeless story of Frankenstein resonates with today’s world. He was drawn to the project after realizing the emotional depth of Field’s adaptation, which framed the story as a conversation between creator and creation—similar to a father-son relationship grappling with neglect and responsibility. The album’s themes also touch on modern issues like technology, AI, and the moral questions that arise from creation, making the project feel both timeless and timely.
Chasez hopes to see Playing With Fire transition to the stage, where it can connect with live audiences on a deeper level. “This is the beginning of a journey to make something that will hopefully end up on a stage,” he shares. With his passion for musical theater, pop, and sci-fi, the album unites all of Chasez’s creative interests, aiming to bring humanity and emotion to life through music.
