Johnny Neel, renowned keyboardist, harmonica player, and former member of the Allman Brothers Band, has passed away at the age of 70. His death was confirmed by fellow bandmate Warren Haynes, who praised Neel for his immense musical talent and unforgettable personality. Known for his wit and creativity, Neel was a prolific songwriter and performer, leaving behind a legacy of stories and music cherished by his peers and fans alike.


Born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 11, 1954, Neel joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1989, contributing to their 1990 album Seven Turns, co-writing four tracks including the hit “Good Clean Fun.” He continued to leave his mark on the band with his songwriting on their final album, Hittin’ the Note in 2003. His ability to blend multiple genres and improvise on stage made him a standout musician in the world of Southern rock.

Despite suffering a stroke in 2019, Neel quickly recovered and returned to performing, demonstrating his lifelong dedication to music. As his former bandmate expressed, “Johnny’s music and his legend will live on forever,” ensuring his contributions to rock history are never forgotten.
