Broadway star Idina Menzel, often a victim of name mispronunciations herself, has taken a stand for Vice President Kamala Harris. In a video PSA shared on Instagram, Menzel emphasized the correct pronunciation of Harris’ name, stating, “It’s Kamala, like a comma — ‘Comma-la.'” Drawing from her own experience, Menzel expressed her frustration with the ongoing mispronunciations, pointing out that getting Harris’ name right is crucial, especially with the upcoming election.
Menzel, who became the center of a viral moment when John Travolta famously mispronounced her name as “Adele Dazeem” during the 2014 Oscars, shared how people still frequently butcher her name. Despite the continued mix-ups, Menzel handled the situation with humor, even poking fun at Travolta in later ceremonies. However, regarding Harris, Menzel stressed the importance of respect, insisting that the vice president’s name be pronounced correctly.
While Menzel’s past encounters with name flubs have been lighthearted, her PSA for Kamala Harris conveys a serious message. She concluded her video with, “I think the vice president and soon-to-be president should have her name pronounced correctly,” urging voters to show respect as Election Day approaches.
