A lawsuit filed in New York alleges that JAY-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Filed by attorney Tony Buzbee, the suit claims the girl was invited to an afterparty, given a drink that left her incapacitated, and subsequently assaulted at a private residence.
The lawsuit initially named Diddy and referred to JAY-Z anonymously as “Celebrity A.” However, a refiled suit explicitly names JAY-Z (Shawn Carter) as a defendant. According to the filing, the girl escaped after fighting back and was eventually picked up by her father.
Through a public statement issued by Roc Nation, JAY-Z denied the allegations, calling them “heinous” and criticizing the motives behind the lawsuit. He emphasized that criminal charges should be pursued if the allegations were valid.
“These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case,” JAY-Z stated. He expressed concern about the impact on his family, noting how the claims might affect his children. Furthermore, he accused Tony Buzbee of attempting to blackmail him, describing the lawyer as a “fraud” seeking profitability through fabricated allegations.
Tony Buzbee took to X (formerly Twitter) to refute JAY-Z’s statements. He accused the rapper of attempting to silence his client and intimidate him through a counter-lawsuit. Buzbee stated that his client sought only a confidential mediation, not monetary compensation, and reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing the case in court.
Diddy has also denied the claims. His legal representatives asserted confidence in the judicial process, stating that “the truth will prevail” and denying any sexual assault allegations against him.
This high-profile case has sparked widespread debate, with some supporting the alleged victim’s courage to come forward and others questioning the motives behind the lawsuit. JAY-Z’s counterclaims accuse Buzbee of extortion, alleging that the lawyer fabricated the allegations for financial gain.
The case highlights the broader issue of handling allegations against powerful figures. Both defendants have denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing their faith in the legal system. As the case unfolds, all parties are preparing for a courtroom battle where facts will be litigated.
