During Pearl Jam’s concert on Saturday, May 18, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, 59-year-old frontman Eddie Vedder did not hold back in expressing his disapproval of Harrison Butker’s recent controversial statements. The NFL player had stirred up a storm with his remarks suggesting that women should focus on raising families rather than pursuing careers outside the home.
“There should be pride in homemaking, whether you’re a man or a woman,” Vedder began, addressing the audience directly. “It’s maybe one of the hardest jobs, and you should definitely take pride in it. But you shouldn’t give up your dreams just because you think it’s the right thing to do. I can’t understand the logic behind that.”
Vedder continued his critique by highlighting Butker’s comments about masculinity. “He was telling men, ‘Don’t forget to puff up your chest and be more masculine, don’t lose your masculinity,’” Vedder said while strumming his guitar, as captured in a fan video. “The irony was that when he was saying that, he looked like such a f—king p—y.”
The “Even Flow” singer further emphasized, “There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman.”
Vedder’s comments came just over a week after Butker delivered a speech at Benedictine’s May 11 commencement ceremony. In his address, Butker condemned President Joe Biden, criticized abortion, birth control, Pride Month, and decried what he called “the cultural emasculation of men.” He also discouraged the female graduates from focusing on career advancements, promotions, and titles, suggesting that their primary joy would come from marriage and motherhood.
“I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker said. “My beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she embraced her vocation as a wife and mother.”
Additionally, Butker’s speech included the promotion of antisemitic misinformation about a congressional bill and a peculiar reference to Taylor Swift’s song “Bejeweled.” He mentioned Swift, referring to her as “Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s girlfriend,” and used a quote to criticize church leaders who become “overly familiar” with their parishioners. “This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time,” Butker noted with a smile. “Because as my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.’”
Vedder isn’t alone in his criticism of Butker. Celebrities like Maren Morris and Flavor Flav have also condemned Butker’s comments. However, there has been some support for Butker from public figures such as Whoopi Goldberg and actress Patricia Heaton, who have defended his right to express his views.
